I'm headed for Gwangju, Korea, to teach English at a haegwon. I should be there around mid-October. Until then I'm doing some subbing and trying to teach myself some Korean.
I studied philosophy and linguistics, and I love languages.
I love strategy games. Nominally, I'm still a tournament Scrabble expert, although I rarely play tournaments these days and probably won't be playing much while in Korea. I also play various forms of poker, especially limit holdem and limit Omaha/8. Poker is probably also on hold for a while.
I read and write poetry of a generally formalist bent, although I like experimentation with structure. Right now I'm oddly getting more deeply into both Rilke and Larkin. I also love "popular music" in genres from prog rock to indie pop to 70s folk rock to bluegrass, and I write about song lyrics and those rare songwriters whose lyrics are of a consistently high quality...
As far as I can tell, I'm some sort of atheist Christian existentialist pessimist wannabe preacher of universal love. The closest thing I have to a religious icon is Lola running.
My favorite joke goes like this:
Q: How do you catch a blue monster?
A: With a blue monster net.
Q: How do you catch a red monster?
A: Hold its nose until it turns blue, then use your blue monster net.
